A Message from City of Vancouver Traffic Operations Management

The Summer of 2018 has begun, and already the numbers show that filming activity in Vancouver are high and expected to climb.  The City's Traffic Operations team are stretched to its maximum capacity and have asked the Film Office to share some important updates and reminders regarding street use for film related activity; with regard to street use request timelines and signage removal in particular.

While the Film Office understands the need to remove posted signs for filming and continuity of picture, the removal of any sign and/or mount will require permission is still considered as 'tampering with City property' and will require prior permission granted by your liaison.  Additionally, all signs that are removed from their positions must be returned to their original spots once filming is complete, including any signage that has been removed not intended for your film set, including any 'temporary no stopping' for past or future/active City or external agency permits scheduled for the same vicinity or surrounding area(s).  Failure to do so have negative impacts; including:

  • Lost or misplaced signs that are moved to an area which the staff from Traffic Operations cannot locate, or taken/stolen by the public.

  • Other internal City Departments or external agencies who have requested parking in the same vicinity lose their parking on the street, resulting in work delays and failure to meet crucial deadlines and completion of delivery for their projects.

Due to the volume, complexity and resources, the Vancouver Film Office are required to provide the Traffic Ops department a minimum of 72 hours notice (3 days) to accommodate any street use permit requests, including any street use that is prep related. Any requests made under this time frame will be accommodated only if resources are available, but in no way guaranteed.

Please inform your liaison if you have any questions or concerns.

"No Stopping" Signage for Filming

The Film Office and Traffic Operations work very hard to make sure film signage is installed on time and without error, however issues can arise from time to time. In order to make sure that productions are guaranteed to get what they need, we ask that the following guidelines are followed when checking signage.

1) Signage must be checked 24 hours (by noon) prior to the shoot date. Example: check signage by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, for filming taking place on Thursday.

2) If filming on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, please check all signage by no later than 12:00 noon on the Friday prior.

If there are any missing or erroneous signs, please be sure to contact your liaison right away, or call the main film office line at 604.257.8840. If given appropriate notice of an issue, the Film Office can work with Traffic Operations on a solution.

Please note:

Productions cannot contract out for or create their own signage. Productions are permitted to cone off their designated approved parking areas (must have permits on set with them), however without signage, any coned off areas are not enforceable. Any unofficial signage that is not created and installed by City of Vancouver will be removed and remain unenforced.

Permit Totals and Parking

Based on 2014 numbers, the amount of film permits issued has risen by 12% compared to 2013. Additionally, according to the number of meter hooding requests in 2014, numbers indicate that parking footprints have been reduced; thus minimalizing impact to their filming areas.  We appreciate the effort to lessen parking requests wherever possible, thank you!

Crew Parking

The Film Office is not able to accommodate crew parking on Vancouver streets. Crew parking should be contained to private property. Please remind your crews to refrain from parking outside of the designated crew parking lots wherever possible.
